Sassy Fella
Sassy Fella is an original mixed media painting on Colourfix 300gsm archival paper. I started with a loose watercolour wash and let the colours bleed and bloom together, then I went in with my pastels, leaving some of the original watercolour exposed. I really like the effect.
This fellow is a magnificent Forest Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, native to the southwest region of Western Australia. The male of the species has predominantly black plumage with distinctive red panels on their tails. They are a larger size compared to other subspecies and have a longer, more prominent bill.
As their name suggests, Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoos primarily inhabit forested areas, including jarrah, marri, and karri forests in the southwest of Western Australia. They rely on these habitats for nesting, roosting, and foraging. We see them mostly in Autumn here in Mandurah and I am always delighted by them.
These beautiful birds are often seen in small family groups or pairs. They have a nomadic lifestyle, moving between different areas in search of food and suitable nesting sites. They have loud and distinctive calls, which are used for communication within their social groups.
Sassy Fella is 68 x 48cm and is unframed.
